Arnold Werner

Back to Werner Arnold

A desire for change brought Werner to Canada from Switzerland at the age of 22.After one year in Quebec City, he moved to Toronto.
While working during the day at unchallenging jobs, he enrolled in night courses at the Beacon Institute and Central Tech., where he studied commercial art and interior design.
After graduation and a very short stint in a commercial art studio, he accepted a position at Eatons, in the display department.Five years working there gave Werner enough experience in display to begin his own business.
Werner free-lanced in window display throughout the Toronto area from 1969 to 1984.His style of wood sculpture was developed during this period.Wood was the dominant material for the display props, and from the earlier pieces which were painted on wood evolved the more elaborate colour washes and appliques that he uses to create the work one sees today.
From the mid-70's to 1994, Werner lived outside Stirling, Ontario in an old farmhouse, working whenever possible to restore it.
In 1994, Werner decided to move to St. Andrews, New Brunswick. In October of 2000, he moved to Montreal to continue his work; then back to New Brunswick in March of 2002, to Fredericton, where he continues his work to this day.
