Roger D. Arndt

Roger D. Arndt has gained international acclaim for his distinctive works in oil.  His paintings portray a dream world that is lyrical and magical, where fantasy and reality meet in varied, softly toned images of nature.

Using a style which challenges conventional perceptions of landscape art, the artist draws the viewer into a setting characterized by luminous, fluid images that move and change with various intensities of light.  A distinguishing quality of an Arndt painting is the ever present, gently flowing mist, whether it depicts and early morning haze, or a deepening sky at twilight.

The mysterious and evocative nature of Arndt's works is achieved through a painstaking technique which originated with 15th century Flemish artists.  Using smooth brush strokes and intensive glazing of layer upon layer of colour, he achieves greater depth and range, yet subtlety of colour.  As light travels through the colours, they change, creating an atmospheric mood and causing the mist to "move."  "It's evocative for me, and I hope for the viewer," says Arndt.  "It's why I like oils as a medium."

Born in 1959, Arndt has been painting full time since leaving school at age 14.  After two years of formal study, he went on to become an established, self-sustaining artist at a young age.  His unique style continues to evolve; recent paintings feature bolder colours and scenes from his native Okanagan in addition to his preferred subjects, the mountains and forests of Western Canada.

At his Kelowna studio located in a picturesque orchard, Arndt is inspired by music, nature and the serenity of his surroundings.  He produces at least 30 paintings each year, each a testimony to the brilliance and vision of this young, vibrant artist.
