    ETHEL VORONKOVA
    Brandford, ON

Ethel's paintings reflect the shifting nature of memory, emotion, and inner experience. Working with acrylic on raw, unprimed canvas, she builds her dreamscape compositions through a soak-stain process — layering colour directly into the surface and leaving sections of the underpainting deliberately exposed. She works intuitively, letting feelings and memories guide her rather than planning things out, and favours a muted palette that silences distraction and draws attention to the quieter, more contemplative moments in life. Influenced by Helen Frankenthaler, Ethel treats the canvas as a field of feeling rather than a picture plane, using fluid forms to map the emotional terrain of the subconscious.

Born in the Philippines, Ethel moved to Canada with her family at the age of nine and has been based in Brantford, Ontario ever since. She studied Fine Art at Centennial College and Graphic Design at Humber College, and in 2017 committed to her practice full-time.

    — "My goal is for those who experience my art to leave with a sense of calmness and a deep appreciation for life."
